Salama Music

Weekly Award Winner - Fringe World 2025

Salama is a cosmopolitan collective of Indian ocean natives & other artists of diverse origins that share a passion for Maloya, Reunion Island’s traditional percussion-based music. Maloya has its roots in Reunion's complex and painful history, and today it's associated with ancestry, being Creole, and blissful freedom.

Salama is fortunate to be a pioneer in sharing the powerful and magical Maloya in Australia, proudly bringing original musical shows that skilfully blend the traditional and modern while sharing stories of joy and nostalgia.

Island Vibrations: Maloya to Sega

Once upon a time, during the 2022 Fringe Festival, we met our audience and showed them our labour of love and passion. A full house each night. Heartfelt gratitude to everyone who came to our shows and supported us. We are humbled and touched that many of you connected to our performance at an emotional level, particularly as many of us are homesick these days.

“A-call-and-response with the audience brings me to tears as I am reminded of the performers who have guided me in South Africa. The command of Toulcanon’s voice brings to mind all those I have missed while being separated during the pandemic.” — Claire French, The Conversation
